WaterFresh Provides Clean Solution to Sewage Treatment Near Great Barrier Reef
Sunrise 1770 is a unique totally sustainable development of some 300 high value lots atop the coastal sand dunes adjacent to Springs Beach immediately south of Agnes Waters in Queensland. The dunes overlay the aquifer which supplies potable water for Agnes Waters and the town of 1770.
The challenge was to design a development which had minimal impact on the surrounding environment including the underlying aquifer and the adjacent Deep Water National Park.
Council and EPA requirements were extremely strict as would be expected in these circumstances.
One major challenge was to provide a water and wastewater system which would cope with the envisioned highly variable population, slow overall development infill and short duration high peak loads.
The solution to this challenge was the adoption of the WaterFresh technology as it provided a system which could be turned on and off, with no likely impacts to the environment.
In addition they were able to meet the very stringent nutrient specifications as the original intent was to also use the recycled water for landscape irrigation of native plant species
The Waterfresh Advantage
The most delightful aspect of the Waterfresh technology is that the CDU (patented technology) component fully disinfects the effluent stream at the beginning of the treatment train. This has the advantage that from that point on the effluent is pathogen free.
Each following treatment process can therefore be designed to deal with specific issues such as nutrients or ammonia or other aspect of the influent without concern for pathogens or odours. This makes these processes much simpler and more effective in their design.
It also logically leads to the ability to produce a designer effluent to meet customers' specific needs. Or two effluents say, one with a higher nutrient content for a specific purpose.
The typical process train produces no environmentally deleterious by products.
This technology makes aquifer injection and recovery a very realistic solution to the water cycle even for potable usage.
Aquifer Injection
The WaterFresh process provides an effluent at Sunrise 1770 which is approved for injection into the underlying aquifer of the excess recycled water.
Aquifer injection would not be allowed where the injected water quality is not at or of better quality than the aquifer receiving waters.
The WaterFresh process and its modular approach allows tailoring of effluent quality which makes meeting such requirements much easier than with existing traditional or biological technology.
